Meet some of our staff who have first-hand understanding of the challenges that marginalised girls face in acquiring an education. Their knowledge, skills and passion combine to ensure we deliver the highest standards in programme design, quality control, highly collaborative partnership working, evidence-informed procedures, inspirational leadership and a commitment throughout to equality and empowerment of girls in education systems.
Mark leads the team that delivers the transformational Girls Education Challenge programme in Kenya. Striving to address gender parity, Mark and his team are working with schools and communities in marginalised areas to increase access for girls, ensure their retention and improve their learning outcomes. Mark is key to the successful collaboration between the programme partners and stakeholders and continues to be driven by the real results he sees on the ground. Through his work, he is changing the lives of thousands of girls in Kenya.
Having worked as a trained teacher in Kenya, Margaret has first-hand understanding of the challenges marginalized girls experience to acquire an education. She is currently the Girls Education Challenge (Kenya) Deputy Project Director, providing technical leadership for the project and overseeing quality control. Her expertise is in educational program design and management with a focus on adolescence and girls’ empowerment. Her passion is to see young people’s lives transformed through high-quality and evidence-based education programme strategies. She is keen to test new and modified approaches to programme delivery that contribute to the achievement of education outcomes for children and young people. Margaret holds a Master’s Degree in Education and International Development from the UCL Institute of Education.
Ruth has worked in international education development since 1999 as a consultant, advisor, researcher and trainer, with a focus on how to improve the learning of the most marginalised, especially girls, in low-resource and conflict-affected settings. She has written evidence reviews on education for adolescent girls for DFID, Plan International and UNICEF. She has worked on the design and monitoring and evaluation of large girls' education programmes in a wide range of countries, including Ethiopia, Nigeria, Kenya and Rwanda. She was a founding member of the Girls’ Education working group of the Gender and Development network. Ruth holds a PhD on science teaching in Tanzania.
As Progamme Deputy Director, Rosa has extensive project management and operational leadership experience focused on the Girls Education Challenge project in Kenya. She has more than ten years’ experience and a strong portfolio of successfully managed education and social development projects in East Africa. Rosa’s expertise ensures strong project control and partnership working, and well-managed delivery teams – all to ensure we deliver on the promises made to thousands of deserving girls and to ensure client satisfaction. Rosa holds an Master’s Degree in Development Studies and a Project Management Professional certification from University of California, Irvine.
Rowan is a teaching and learning consultant specialising in computing, with particular expertise in addressing the factors that contribute to the gender gap in careers. Rowan authored an unconscious bias toolkit for educators as part of our TechPathways project with the Greater London Authority in England. Rowan supports our annual Girls’ Robo Challenge, which invites all-female teams of young programmers to IBM’s London headquarters for a robotics competition, during which they build the skills and confidence to help make careers in technology more appealing and accessible. Rowan also led the teaching and curriculum aspects of an Erasmus+ project called #Co-Think, in which teachers and pupils in the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland and Denmark collaborated to establish inclusive practices in the teaching of digital competences and computational thinking.
Ella is a researcher with particular expertise in girls’ education with ten years of experience in monitoring and evaluation, research and literature review. She has worked for clients including FCDO, Plan International, the Varkey Foundation and UNGEI on research around girls’ access to schooling, skills development and tackling discriminatory social norms. Ella works closely with our programme teams in East Africa and is committed to the transformative impact of education for the most marginalised. Ella holds an MSc in Gender, Development and Globalisation from the London School of Economics.
